The emergence of interventional radiology as a medical specialty over the past four decades has changed the face of modern medicine. The ability to use technology to provide medical treatments that do not require large incisions, and offer less risk, less pain and shorter recovery times than surgery has been one of the most significant medical advances in recent years. Developing new devices, better medications, and improved procedures is the process of innovating and research is key to innovation. Fostering research that leads to improved patient care and quality of life is essential to perpetuating the future of this innovative specialty, and is the mission of this organization.
List of SIR Foundation Grants and Awards
SIR Foundation allocates $400,000 each year to support high quality, peer-reviewed research in interventional radiology and benefits researchers at all levels, from graduate students to established practitioners.
Academic Transition Grant – Designed for interventional radiologists over the age of 40 who have recently begun their academic careers after spending several years in non-academic practice. This grant is intended to facilitate the establishment of independent research to promote a career in academia. Application Deadline: December 14, 2018
Allied Scientist Grant – Provides support to trainees enrolled in graduate-level training programs outside the clinical realm of interventional radiology, but are still considered crucial to the future of IR. This grant is intended to create collaborative research training environments that benefit from the unique perspectives of established scientists and interventional radiologists. Application Deadline: December 14, 2018
Dr. Ernest J. Ring Academic Development Grant – Provides support to junior interventional radiology faculty members early in their academic careers to allow a minimum of 30% protected time to conduct research. Application Deadline: December 14, 2018
Funding Source Development Grant – Supports clinical research projects that advance interventional radiology and patient care that also align with SIR Foundation’s clinical research goals. This grant is designed to support the development of projects identified and highly prioritized by a SIR Foundation Research Consensus Panel (RCP), however, other projects that did not go through the RCP process will also be eligible for consideration. Support will be provided for costs related to developing any of the following:
- A complete protocol for a clinical study
- Federal application designed to seek support for a NIH-funded clinical study
- Complete clinical proposal designed for subsequent industry funding
- Operations/training manual and supporting materials as needed for a clinical study
- Letter of Intent for Non-RCP Applicants– May 28th
- Letter of Intent for RCP Applicants – November 14th
- Application Deadline for RCP and Non-RCP Applicants – December 14th
Pilot Research Grant Program – Funds research in areas identified by SIR Foundation as vital to the advancement of interventional radiology and patient care. These grants generally address a specific hypothesis and generate preliminary data that could be used to justify or strengthen subsequent comprehensive applications to national peer-reviewed funding agencies. This grant may also provide support for initial research efforts of faculty as well as those who have limited research experience. Application deadline: December 14, 2018
Radiology Resident Research Grant – Provides support for project related supplied and equipment for radiology residents conducting innovative summer research projects. Application Deadline: February 1, 2019
Dr. and Mrs. W.C. Culp Student Research Grant – Fosters medical students with an interest in research. This award supports a student conducting a summer research project in an area identified by SIR Foundation as important to the advancement of interventional radiology and patient care. Application Deadline: February 1, 2019
HHMI Medical Research Fellows Program - Each year, SIR Foundation funds one medical student to conduct preclinical research in interventional radiology as part of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's (HHMI) prestigious Medical Research Fellows Program. The Medical Research Fellows Program supports a year of full-time biomedical research training for medical, dental and veterinary students. For application and eligibility requirements, visit the HHMI’s fellowship page.
Proposal Development Form - Provides applicants the opportunity to receive preliminary feedback regarding their research proposals. Applicants interested in submitting a proposal to the Ring Academic Development Grant, Academic Transition Grant, Allied Scientist Grant, or the Pilot Research Grant are eligible to submit a form. Application deadline: June 15, 2019
Dr. Constantin Cope Medical Student Research Award - The purpose of this award is to introduce interested medical students to the greater interventional radiology community at the SIR Annual Scientific Meeting and recognize the student author of an accepted abstract that best honors the spirit of inventiveness and scientific purity. Medical students at an accredited medical school who have demonstrated an interest in interventional radiology as a career and have participated in an original research project may apply. Application Deadline: November 15, 2018
The Annual Meeting Research Award Committee selects up to six recipients of this award each year.
Dr. Gary J. Becker Young Investigator Award– This award recognizes early-stage practitioners in interventional medicine and encourages their pursuit of academic careers. The author of the most outstanding clinical science research paper submitted will receive this award. Application Deadline: November 15, 2018
Leaders in Innovation Award – This award recognizes individuals who have conceptualized and implemented an idea that has had an advantageous impact on the practice of interventional radiology. This innovation can be a device, technique, approach, clinical practice model, or anything having a significant improvement upon the quality of patient care or economics of interventional practice. Nominations due: October 13, 2018
Resident/Fellow Research Award - Provide residents and fellows an opportunity to attend and present their scientific research at the SIR Annual Scientific Meeting. Application Deadline: November 15, 2018
